Moab, Utah Mountain Biking 2002

July 7th
As part of a mini-trip during our 2002 Crested Butte Trip we took a small detour to Moab. July isn’t the best time to go as the temperatures were in the triple digits. But, we had one day to kill so why not? It was only 3 hours out of the way.
We got to Moab around 5pm and hit a bike shop to buy Mark a new tire. Mark’s tire was warped due to a bike carrier hitch accident. We got a room at the Motel 6 and ate dinner at Denny’s.
Our plan was to wake at 5am and get to the trailhead by 6am. Of course, we were late but only by 45 minutes. At 6:45am we were at the trailhead and it was about 75 degrees.

I thought we could ride Slickrock in 4 hours, we actually started riding around 7:15 and I wasn’t feeling too well during the ride. About 1.5 hours into the ride I was really feeling bad and threw up on the trail. That made me feel alot better but we were still riding at a very slow pace. Around 9:00am we were only 4 miles into a 11 mile ride so we decided to turn back. When we arrived at the truck it was 10am and 92 degrees! Slickrock is definitely different than riding on dirt. There is no give in the rock, but it provides so much more traction. It’s also alot easier to get lost here, everything looks the same!
Back at the hotel, we showered and packed the truck and headed for Crested Butte.
Yes, it was a short stay, but we’ll definitely be back…when it’s a little cooler.
